The local AAF already had a great logo and some emerging brand standards - and I was asked incorporate them into a "retro" look.

To achieve the retro look, and maintain a strong visual connection to the existing materials, I used the rounded polygon shape from the logo at various sizes and shades of 583 green, to create a seamless pattern (bottom left)...think 1950s formica...

Because I created the pattern as a vector file, I was able to tile in the background of an 11x17 poster (top right), a table tent (bottom right) and a 3'x7' banner (not pictured) and the file sizes remained quite small. Both the poster and the table tent can be used as shell templates so that as events arise over the course of the year, information can be updated and printed on an as needed basis.

Rhett Smith Business Card

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 118px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/TJErc7BsGFI/AAAAAAAABEs/N0UI0xeUbS8/s200/rhett+card.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5517238794386675794" />
This is a business card I created for a guitar teacher/studio musician. We agreed that it was important to convey a professional look with a nod to the creative. I scanned his signature (which is an important identifier in the guitar world) and developed a card that incorporates a classic serifed font on a steel gray background. To get his signature to really pop- I set it in 485 red, and to give the card a more custom look, the back of the card will be all red as well.

The color towards the edges on both sides of the card gets increasingly saturated, and the card is printed on a heavy weight uncoated stock. While the color effect may be difficult to pick-up on screen, those subtleties result in a card that evokes the look of the boutique guitar manufacturers.

Sadie's Shoes

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 184px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/TFsmuD1lFAI/AAAAAAAABBI/sydm9GShNqU/s200/sadies+logo+w-shoe.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5502033942509065218" />
This is a logo/business card/storefront sign package that I put together for Sadie's Shoes, a new women's shoe store in Arlington, MA. The owner requested that I create something simple and ecclectic with a hint of the classic and a dash of fun.

To accomplish that- I chose to create a hybrid wordmark that contained enough script elements to achieve a feminine look, but not so much that it looked dated (i was still going for a relatively modern look). I also wanted to include the "shoes and accessories line" because i think it gives the sadie's brand a little more identity especially when a prospective customer who has never been inside Sadie's is simply looking at a storefront sign.

Rather than using an ampersand in the "shoes and accessories" line, I drew a stylized profile of a women's shoe to add some visual interest to the wordmark. I think the shoe adds just the touch of whimsy that I was looking for...

Rome Frenzy

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 158px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/TFhg6VDBW8I/AAAAAAAABBA/Y2N0BATybs4/s200/Rome+logos.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501253500031556546" />
This is the logo I designed for the Rome Frenzy, a single A hockey franchise in the newly formed Federal Hockey League (with apologies to the iconic 70s flick, Slap Shot). The upstate NY team contacted me with roughly a 10 day turnaround time and gave me the team name and a rough idea of the sort of look they were going for- a family friendly, cartoonish piranha mascot that incorporated an obvious hockey theme. They had also settled on the colors as well- a light blue/silver/black scheme. The team's formation and ownership details were not finalized until just before the official press conference, so I had to work quickly-

I sketched the original shape on paper and then re-traced it in illustrator to create the image. I also created a few possible alternate word marks for them to choose from and once the logo was settled on. While I did not design their website, I did create a web banner for their official site that helps to maintain the overall look of the brand.

Rehearsal Dinner Invitations

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 171px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/S7TGSdDpMQI/AAAAAAAAA_M/mt2Bl2j5xBE/s200/rehearsal+invite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455203068992368898" />
Here are my rehearsal dinner invitations...first off, it's super exciting to prepare for my wedding, and even more fun that I get to put my own spin on a few elements- this being the perfect example of that.

All the elements are being printed one color- PMS 295U on ivory colored stock. The calendar serves multiple purposes and generally represents the most prolific marketing piece of the year. It is sent out to the roughly 6,000 people on the mailing list and distributed to area businesses and retailers in the Clemson/Anderson/Seneca area. In all, 20,000 calendars are printed per year.

The 2009-10 calendar incorporated the color scheme that I developed for the fundraising brochure, and this color scheme will carry the Brooks Center through the year. It is a 36 page book that contains general information about the organization, a removable ticket order form, a 14 month Calendar, a removable bookmark (with a chronological season listing on it- much like a schedule card), images of the Clemson campus featuring both new and traditional architectural structures, and a completely re-designed format placing an emphasis on usability. If you're in the upstate of SC, Look for the calendars around town!

Brooks Center Swag

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/Smctr3ANvKI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/FqzviT5P3WE/s200/Brooks-Koozie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361304112930340002" />
In preparation for all of the "welcome back" festivities at Clemson, the Brooks Center decided to produce koozies to distribute to the fine students and members of the community. Noel is an emerging micro-brewery that has a pretty cool mission- to use their profits to help those who need it. In response to that mission, we thought it was important to include some Nashville imagery in the design of the banner in recognition of Noel's neighborhood- and neighbors. Thus the Nashville skyline in the background.

The banner is 8 feet wide by 28 inches tall and the logo itself is about 5.5 feet wide. I designed an 8 foot banner so that we could mount the banner to the front of an 8 foot table to provide a more professional looking "booth-like" feel. I designed the logo to be 5.5 feet wide so that in the event that we mount the banner to a 6 foot table, the entire logo will still be visible and the excess can be wrapped around the ends of the table.

Stage Right

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 163px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/SiQode1j7_I/AAAAAAAAArU/nOhl762-B9I/s200/stageright.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342439544927285234" />
Stage Right is an annual brochure that the department of performing arts produces to promote the departmental curriculum to both majors and non-majors. It is distributed at the summer orientation programs to new students and it also tends to find its way home with high school students who come to visit during the year. In the past, the publication was rather haphazardly produced- usually 1 or 2 color, not particularly organized or readable and included no images. Since it was originally designed (and budgeted) as a handout, there wasn't a lot of room in the budget to print a full-color piece.

The primary audience for this piece is the student body and the secondary audience is their parents. I wanted to create an attractive brochure that presented the information in an organized manner- and I wanted it to attract the students' attention in a way that feels professional and smart. I also wanted to include some visual elements from the 09-10 look- like the arrow, the dotted line rules, and the color scheme (pantone 160, and Warm Gray 11).

By using monotone images and accenting them with pantone 160 (orange) elements, I was able to maintain the 2-color print without breaking the bank. I created a background gradient to warm up the page a little, and I applied the multiply effect to the orange text boxes to add depth to those elements. I'm happy with how it turned out- and the department was thrilled with the update. They were surprised to learn that it was still only a 2-color brochure.

The image includes the front, back, and a partial view of the inside spread of the brochure. (click the image to enlarge)

The Pie Lady

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 118px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/Sha0qKJbjxI/AAAAAAAAAq0/N0Ols-Fqjuw/s200/pielady.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338653044665716498" />
This is a modified business card that I designed for "The Pie Lady" in Woodbridge, VA. The Pie Lady routinely bakes fresh, homemade pies and delivers them to the good folks of northern VA just to brighten their day. It's become something of a ministry of good deeds and the response has been fantastic. She was looking for a business card-sized piece that she could enclose/attach to each pie, almost like a tag. The card needed to be customizable so that she could add contact info in the future if necessary.

The design functions like gift card and folds along the long edge, so that the pie lady can enclose a handwritten greeting for the lucky recipients.

I think the red/brown color scheme evokes images of cherry or apple pie (my personal favorites) and I chose to include a watercolor pie that was painted by one of The Pie Lady's friends on the back of the card. I have room below the logo on the front to include a slogan and below the pie on the back to include any sort of pertinent contact info.

Be on the lookout for the Pie Lady- she's getting rave reviews for her work!

Spring Expression Cover

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 154px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/ShRpjdqM1lI/AAAAAAAAAqs/p0d0yH0xE3A/s200/spring-expression.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338007516318848594" />
I recently finished work on the spring issue of Expression. Since this issue details the upcoming season for the top donors, I decided to feature Lang Lang- easily the most famous artist on the 09-10 calendar. I used his original press photo and created a surreal starry sky in the background complete with thor-like lightning bolts coming out of his hands to illuminate his name. This one was a lot of fun to work on-

I incorporated the arrows that I used in the 09-10 fundraising brochure on the cover. I did that to get our patrons used to seeing them- as I will continue to use them in upcoming publications for the 09-10 year to indicate important information. As the university continues to phase in elements of a new branding effort, I have attempted to adopt as many elements as I can, as early as possible- to stay ahead of the game. So far, I've incorporated fonts and colors as well as the overall messaging strategy: "Lead." The back page of Expression is essentially a full page photo with text that expresses the "Lead" message in some way. This issue features a photo of an actress from a Clemson Players production accompanied by masthead text reading": "Leading Actress...".

Tugalo Holler - Lost at Sea

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/SgGr7fW8JsI/AAAAAAAAAqM/IWcCIyb8eQM/s200/lost-at-sea.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332732472301725378" />
This project is another Tugalo Holler piece that is actually a re-release of a record that TH put out in 2004. My skills as a designer have developed pretty substantially in the last 5 years so when they needed to re-release the record- I saw it as an opportunity to revamp the art. They graciously accommodated my request and by all accounts- are quite pleased with the results.

The linch pin in this design is the lighthouse- I took cues from the clouds in the original photo and created a more ominous looking sky by adding several clouds throughout. I integrated the flying seagull (if you squint you might be able to make it out on the cover...) throughout as another sign of guidance (seagulls know where the land is...).

I used Engravers MT as the title font for its heavy weight and industrial revolution/interchangeable parts/mechanical reproduction look. I used News Gothic for most of the text because its a versatile sans serif font that is easily readable at smaller sizes and doesn't intrude on the overall aesthetic.

Expression

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 163px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/SeoMKbekcfI/AAAAAAAAAow/_oxNvP7i_ZQ/s200/expression.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326082882633232882" />
The Brooks Center produces a quarterly newsletter for the upper level donors called Expression. This time they asked for something "sassy..." Unfortunately I didn't have any hi-res TakeNote photos, so I had to find a way to convey who they were (a female vocal group) and the attitude they were going for- without using imagery that is obviously NOT any of the girls in the group. Luckily I tracked down the photo you see in the final piece- of the girl with sunglasses on. By not revealing her eyes (one of the most identifiable features on anyone) I was able to create the look and feel they were going for, without having to set up a photo shoot- (we were working with very little time!)

Brooks Center Brochure

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 138px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/SeoF-p2hAII/AAAAAAAAAog/-VLybu8TsNM/s200/Brooks-Center-Brochure.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326076083263570050" />
I recently completed the 2009-2010 Brooks Center fundraising brochure (pictured on the right). On top of doing the design work, I was also responsible for guiding the overall messaging strategy along with the exec. director, marketing director, and box office manager. The overall look and feel (i.e. fonts, color palette etc.) comes from an emerging branding effort on the part of the university.

The final piece was printed on 80# glossy cover stock with a dry trap dull varnish covering the majority of the piece, and a dry trap spot gloss over the images and the orange text (i.e. "enter in" and the quotation marks etc.) That way the images and important text will "pop" a little more- as they'll be the only glossy elements on the piece. The actual size of the brochure when it's folded is 5.5"x11"...so as not to go unnoticed in the mail. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The messaging was also integrated into the annual calendar which also included a schedule card with the entire season listing that functions as a book mark- so that the Brooks Center can participate in your stories too...(clever...)

Kudos to Electric City, who completed the printing- they did a fantastic job. (They also helped me figure out the best strategy and technical specs for creating the gloss vs. dull finish.) I highly recommend them-

Whisper | a dcf liturgy

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/SeoDoj0eEeI/AAAAAAAAAoY/0XNjwkYMzzs/s200/whisper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326073504663998946" />
I was asked to handle the design and production of the cd packaging for the dcf band project entitled "Whisper | a dcf liturgy" Luckily I had access to the facilities at the Clemson Graphics dept. I created a 2 color design and printed it on glossy cover stock. I was really happy with the final result. It's pretty satisfying to spend hours running the press- and emerge all inky and tired...with a great looking final product. I ran the job on an offset AB Dick duplicator ca. 1960s. They asked me to include an image of railroad tracks and to create an aesthetic that looked and felt rugged and desolate and a little mysterious. I think my favorite element of the design is an image of a 50s era pickup truck that has been left- abandoned in a pasture- overgrown with weeds and covered in rust. That image appears inside the clear jewel case, under the cd. I used a font called thousand sticks for the album title- it comes from a great western collection I picked up a few years ago.

If you like bluegrass- check out Tugalo Holler- they're a great representation of old school Appalachian family style pickin'

All Souls Logo

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 52px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2jM-UekGY8U/SefXYpLr6jI/AAAAAAAAAnw/99IWqNdYopQ/s200/all-souls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325461902760602162" />
I have several old type foundry catalogues that I often leaf through to get ideas for new work.
